Welcome back to the Maximizing Low Vision series here at Braille Institute. My name is Shelby and this is Alyssa, and we are occupational therapy interns leading this series. This is week 4 of this series and we are here to provide ways to make every day tasks that you may find difficult easier with information, tips, techniques, and some devices that you may find beneficial.

Some areas we have already covered in the previous weeks includes health management, organizing your closets, and kitchen safety and meal preparation. This week, we are going to cover clothing management and laundry management. These areas can feel like chores to everyone, but can be more difficult when you have low vision.

Our goal for this week is to provide some tips, techniques, and even some devices that may make these tasks easier or more efficient. Laundry management can include being able to set the correct settings on the washer or dryer, measuring dry and liquid soaps proportionately, sorting clothes, keeping all our socks together, and being able to identify and treat stains.

When it comes to our clothing, there are things we need to do with our clothes besides putting them on. This lesson we will go over ways to iron, de-wrinkle, mend, sew, remove fur, and use scissors to help us manage our clothes. We are going to show you ways to make these tasks easier, and some products that may help as well.

We are also going to provide a list of these resources at the end and where you can get them. You do not have to purchase these things to be successful at managing laundry and clothes. You can always use other techniques, and you may even have a useful strategy that we did not cover in this presentation. The devices we show are only recommendations, and we are going to incorporate other techniques and principles as well.

Course Objectives

Identify 1 device or strategy to make laundry tasks easier for individuals with low vision.

Identify 1 device or strategy to make mending clothes easier for individuals with low vision

These are the objectives for this week’s lesson. First, we would like you by the end of this presentation to be able to identify 1 device or strategy to make laundry easier for individuals with low vision.

We will cover this topic first. This does not necessarily mean identifying one item to purchase and use. Other strategies that are affordable include adjusting lighting, increasing contrast or some other technique.

The second objective for this lesson is to be able to identify 1 device or strategy to make mending clothes or managing them easier for individuals with low vision. Achieving both of these objectives can be the first step to making the change.
