Support Groups

Experiencing vision loss can be overwhelming and scary.  You may find that you need support beyond what you receive at your doctor’s office.  A vision loss support group may be a great place for you to find encouragement, assistance, and understanding from others who are also living with low vision or blindness.

At a select number of centers, students can meet with a skilled social worker to aid in dealing in their journey of vision loss through either one-on-one sessions or in-person groups. Or, if home feels better, support groups also meet remotely online or hybrid – some lead by the students themselves.

Whatever mode, in-person, or online, students have a forum for expressing frustrations, asking for advice and sharing stories with people who truly get it. Many have formed life-long friendships.

Support Group Offerings Come together with your peers to discuss topics such as personal attitudes toward blindness, self-esteem, coping strategies, and discussion of the roles of family and friends in the vision loss journey. And we know there is so much to unpack. That’s why health and wellness, meaning and purpose, natural strengths, emotional support, feelings internally and dealing with larger systems, including finances and transportation are all subjects approached head-on to help with adjusting and thriving.
