We’re transforming lives every day at Braille Institute. And, much like a family connects and gets involved to nurture and support eachother, that’s what it feels like to our students when you are a part of our community of friends and volunteers. The impact is thousands of individuals living with vision loss – of every age – leading enriched and fulfilling lives.

Such was the case with Braille Institute’s founder, J. Robert Atkinson who experienced the complete despair of sudden vision loss. Invited to church by a friend, he experienced a musically spiritual moment that gave him hope. Atkinson was soon surrounded and supported by family, friends, benefactors and various business and government leaders in his quest to invent and advocate to help others facing vision loss be self-reliant, educated and employed.
