Understanding Common Conditions
Diabetic Retinopathy
- Linked to both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
- Occurs when high blood sugar levels cause blood vessel breakage in the retina
Macular Degeneration
- Top cause of vision loss in people aged 65 and above
- A result of natural aging or genetic factors
- Impairs clear central vision, but complete vision loss is rare
Retinis Pigmentosa
- Inherited condition causing gradual retinal degeneration and loss of side vision
- Leads to “tunnel vision,” impacts night vision and mobility, but complete vision loss is rare
Glaucoma
- High fluid pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve
- Narrows the field of vision and can lead to total blindness if untreated
- Early detection is crucial for effective treatment
Cataracts
- Cloudiness of the eye’s lens
- Commonly affects people over 65 years old
- Surgery can replace the cloudy lens with an artificial one, improving vision significantly

“I can crack eggs and I make sourdough bread. There’s nothing I can’t do. Obviously, I can’t drive to the grocery store, but I can Instacart like it’s nobody’s business.”
“This year’s Finals are not only a celebration of our talented students but also a testament to 25 years of transformative impact. Braille Challenge is more than a competition—it’s a movement that shapes futures, builds confidence, and creates lifelong friendships.”
