Low Vision Rehabilitation

Some low vision cases cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medicine, or surgery alone. Be assured there is still plenty that can be done to continue living a fulfilling, independent life. That’s where we come in. (For free).

We offer free tips videos and learning opportunities via workshops, or our Low Vision Rehabilitation service will help you maximize the vision you’ve still got by honing in on your needs and helping you continue with day-to-day activities.

Low Vision Rehabilitation Explained

Our low vision services are not a substitute for any medical treatments and will not restore your sight. What they will do is teach how to live safely and independently with low vision.

Who it’s for

If you’re having issues with any of these tasks, our low vision evaluations are the perfect place to start.

  • Reading print in newspapers, magazines, or books
  • Watching tv or using the computer
  • Reading labels on medicine bottles
  • Preparing meals and shopping
  • Recognizing the faces of family and friends
  • Working at a job

Conditions our clients often have

We are here for people with a significant decrease in vision for any reason. Most commonly, we see people who have conditions such as:

  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Hemianopia
  • Macular degeneration

What you’ll get out of it

Once we’re done, you should be able to accomplish daily tasks that once felt challenging, such as reading, writing, cooking or using a computer. We are here to help you make the most of your vision.

How it works

Our two-step process is a simple one.

1. We have an initial phone or video call where we introduce you to Braille Institute, outline our services, and learn about your vision loss and goals.

2. The second is a functional evaluation that can be done in-person at one of our centers or by video call. During this meeting, we will assess your particular eye condition needs, provide a reading and lighting assessment, and fill you in about our classes, services and ongoing workshops.

In certain cases, we may be able to offer an at-home option for the second visit. For this session, you will be mailed a Braille Institute Vision In Place (VIP) toolkit to assess your reading skills and lighting needs.

Please note: We require a doctor’s referral so you can receive the most beneficial care.
