Welcome to the second lesson of the Maximizing Low Vision Series at Braille Institute. I am Shelby and I am Alyssa and we are the Occupational Therapy interns here at Braille Institute. These lessons are for low vision individuals to learn about different techniques and devices they can use to accomplish everyday tasks. Each week we look at a topic and area of health a person, wants to do or needs to do.

This week’s topic will be on personal grooming. We all wake up each morning and need to get ready for our day. We might shower, choose our outfit, brush our teeth, then need to either shave our face or put on makeup. Personal grooming means doing all these things and more to keep ourselves healthy and hygienic.

Low vision may make these tasks difficult or impossible to do for many reasons. There might be difficulty seeing what a product is or applying toothpaste to a toothbrush or soap in our hand. Low vision can create safety hazards in the shower or when shaving. This class will provide you with many strategies for how to accomplish these tasks with low vision.

We do not expect you to use all of these or for them all to be relevant to you, but we want to show you some items and techniques that you may find beneficial. We also included videos throughout the presentation that have us demonstrating a few of these devices.

Course Objectives

Identify one technique, device, or strategy that makes personal grooming easier.

Apply one technique, device, or strategy to personalize your grooming routine.

Here we have outlined goals and what benefits we expect you to have by the end of this presentation. After going through this powerpoint, we would like you to be able to identify at least one technique or device that you believe will make personal grooming easier for you. We want you to then be able to plan out how and when you are going to use this technique or device. Our goal is to have you find a technique or device from this powerpoint that you personally believe you will use. Some of these might take some practicing before you are doing the task with ease, and that is okay.
