A New Braille Challenge Category for Early Learners and Non-Competitive Braille Readers

At its core, Braille Challenge is about building a community around braille. Thousands of students have stepped up to the challenge and walked away with pride, confidence, and new friends. Braille Challenge is more than just a competition because we’re redefining what it means to participate. Historically, Braille Challenge was for any student grades 1-12 who read and write braille. Now? Braille Challenge is for all students who are readers, writers, and LEARNERS of braille. Whether you’re new to learning braille or the competitive arena isn’t for you, we want every student to participate in Braille Challenge because braille is for everyone.

Who Can Participate in the Foundational Category?

The Foundational category is specifically designed to be accessible and supportive for a variety of students, including:

  • Students with multiple disabilities who may need individualized support, such as one-on-one proctoring, to complete the activities.
  • Students who are new to braille and may not yet be at the same reading and writing level as their peers.
  • Students who aren’t ready for the traditional Braille Challenge competition.

This flexible approach ensures that every student, regardless of their unique needs or learning pace, can engage with braille in a way that feels comfortable and rewarding.
