Braille Institute's Career Services program is dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired adults, ages 18 to 30, find meaningful employment. Youths & Teens
Early groundwork is the best way to prepare blind and visually impaired youths for the competitive job market. Mastering adaptive technology and becoming confident living in a mainstreamed world put visually impaired children in control of their own destiny, ready to take on the same challenges and embrace the same opportunities as their sighted peers. Blind Working Adults
Only one-third of American young adults (ages 18-30) who are blind or visually impaired are in the work force—compared to more than 90 percent of their sighted peers. The goal of Braille Institute’s Career Services program is to close the gap by helping our students master the skills necessary to pursue meaningful careers. We assist them in entering the labor market well equipped both physically and emotionally.
Hiring Blind Employees
Many employers are reluctant to hire visually impaired individuals for a variety of reasons including perceived cost and risk of injury. In fact, recent studies show that, on average, blind employees stay at their jobs longer and work harder than their sighted counterparts. The data also support the fact that blind employees are less likely to be injured on the job than their sighted peers. Blind workers are not looking for an unfair advantage, just an opportunity. With simple adaptations, blind people are able to excel at virtually any occupation from secretary to attorney to state governor.
