Braille Research and Literacy, Inc.

A nonprofit corporation whose mission is to improve via innovative technology the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired. A free monthly newsletter —"What You Feel Is What You Get"—highlights products and services presently available and discusses breakthroughs in technology for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Braille Through Remote Learning (BRL)

An online instructional program that provides teachers, parents, social workers and current/future braille transcribers with a series of three integrated online courses in braille and braille transcribing.

Brian's Eye

Canadian National Institute for the Blind

A Canadian organization that helps people who are blind, visually impaired and deaf-blind to live productive, fulfilling and happy lives.

Carroll Center for the Blind

Serves the needs of blind and visually impaired persons by providing rehabilitation, skills training and educational opportunities to achieve independence, self-sufficiency, and self-fulfillment and by educating the public regarding the potential of persons who are blind and visually impaired.

The Center for the Partially Sighted

With locations in West Los Angeles and Torrance, California, the Center for the Partially Sighted helps visually impaired people of all ages enhance remaining sight in order to function independently. This Web site also has a page that gives you tips for adjusting your computer screen for optimal contrast and magnification, found at http://www.low-vision.org/computer.html.

Cleveland Sight Center

An organization located in Cleveland, Ohio, that helps people of all ages with vision loss to enjoy healthy and productive lives.

Community Services for the Blind and Partially Sighted

An organization located in Seattle, Washington, that works with individuals, families and communities to restore, maintain and enhance the independence and well-being of people with impaired vision.

Disabled Businesspersons Association

A nonprofit organization that helps disabled entrepreneurs and professionals maximize their potential in the business world and encourages the participation and enhances the performance of people who are disabled in the work force.

Dots for Families

A braille literacy web site for families of children with visual impairments. The site teaches parents beginning braille, includes stories about braille readers and offers fun and games for the entire family.

Dr. Bill Foundation
The Dr. Bill Takeshita Foundation provides information and assistance to help children who are visually impaired. The Foundation was established in 2004 after Dr. Takeshita, a pediatric low vision optometrist ironically lost his own sight but gained a new perspective on vision impairment.

Foundation for the Junior Blind

The Foundation for the Junior Blind provides programs and services for children, adults and their families to enable blind and visually-impaired children, young people, and adults to acheive independence and self-esteem.

Foundation Fighting Blindness

A national eye research organization that funds laboratory and clinical research at more than 40 prominent institutions in the United States and foreign countries. It also serves as a national source of information on blindness.

GovBenefits

GovBenefits.gov serves as the U.S. government's official benefits website. GovBenefits.gov helps citizens quickly identify benefits offered across the government that meet their specific needs, including information to assist them in times of disaster or other emergencies.

GovBenefits.gov provides all citizens with a central location to find more than 1,000 Federal and State assistance programs for disaster relief, employment services, small-business loans, Medicare and more. Using an online questionnaire, citizens seeking assistance can quickly find programs they may be eligible to receive.

Guide Dogs for the Blind

An organization located in San Rafael, California, that provides highly trained guide dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired.

Guide Dogs of America

Providing professionally trained guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind or visually impaired individuals, so that they may pursue their goals of independence and greater mobility.

The Guide Horse Foundation

Providing a safe, cost-effective and reliable mobility alternative for visually impaired people and to deliver trained Guide Horses at no cost to the recipient.

Hebrew Visions

Los Angeles Eye Institute

The Low-Vision Gateway

Provides information on the World Wide Web related to the fields of low vision and blindness.

Low Vision Web Ring

A list of more than 20 Web rings that provide information and support for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Lutheran Braille Workers, Inc.

A nonprofit organization providing free braille and large-print Bibles and scriptures in 43 languages to people who are blind and visually impaired in more than 130 countries around the world.

Macular Degeneration Partnership

Providing comprehensive, easily understood and up-to-the-minute information about macular degeneration to the public through the Internet, telephone, public events and printed materials, to support research and to coordinate advocacy efforts.

Maryland School for the Blind

National Eye Institute (NEI)

One of the federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), NEI conducts and supports research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and other disorders of vision. The site includes a Clinical Studies Database, offering information on major completed and ongoing clinical research supported by the NEI since 1970.

National Federation of the Blind

The nation's largest and most influential membership organization of people who are blind or visually impaired.

National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped

Administers a free library program of braille and recorded materials circulated to eligible borrowers through a network of cooperating libraries.

Oakmont Visual Aids Workshop

The Oakmont Visual Aids Workshop provides teachers of blind and mentally impaired children with tactile learning materials, including readiness materials teaching basic concepts, basic Braille instruction materials, educational games, and math study aids. The learning aids are made by hand by a group of volunteers living in Oakmont Village, an Adult Community in Santa Rosa, California.

Text-Key

This organization provides thousands of books as well as any publications you submit for the visually impaired. The books may be ordered on line and are delivered on a CD. A user receives ELF (Enhanced Letter Format) publications in both 30 and 48 point type which can be read on a computer screen or printed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. This type is much larger and easier to read than other publications currently available.
