Fourth Annual Cycling for Sight Event Is Gearing Up!

 • 200 miles of beautiful scenery
 • 3 days of fun and friendship
 • A lifetime of difference

August 1 - 3, 2008, more than 50 cyclists, including blind riders, will take to the streets on an epic journey of more than 200 miles. It's not the Tour De France, but these dedicated riders will put the pedal to the asphalt for a special cause - to help raise awareness about sight loss.

The 4th Annual Cycling for Sight bike ride will begin at Braille Institute's Santa Barbara Center on August 1. The purpose of this special event is to raise awareness about blindness and the various retinal diseases that affect more than 9 million Americans across the country. The proceeds will benefit Braille Institute's Youth and Career Services program, which helps foster independent living skills and build self-confidence in blind and visually impaired children.

The riders will journey south along the beautiful California coastline from Santa Barbara to Malibu and then on to Laguna Beach. The ride will conclude on August 3 at Braille Institute's San Diego Center, but not before the long-suffering participants are joined by 15 blind and visually impaired children riding tandem bikes, who will join in the last leg of the race to the finish line in a show of support and encouragement.

If you are interested in participating in the Cycling for Sight event, either as a volunteer or a rider, please visit the event's Web site at: www.cyclingforsight.org.

Braille Institute Library Wins National Award
Braille Institute Library has been recognized as the best in the nation by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) a division of the Library of Congress. The award was presented June 1, 2005 in ceremonies at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. to Henry Chang, Ph.D., director of BrailleInstitute Library Services and Leslie Stocker, president, Braille Institute.

“Braille Institute easily exceeded the award criteria,” said Frank Kurt Cylke, NLS director. “Not only did the library continue to meet the needs of patrons during a time of budget cuts and staff reductions, its readership and circulation increased substantially. Most important, it received a 99 percent patron approval rating.”

“I am elated that Braille Institute Library has been selected to receive the first Network Library of the Year Award,” said Stocker. “This reflects the outstanding professional leadership of Dr. Henry Chang and the excellent work of our staff.”

The award recognizes excellence, innovation and special achievements by an NLS regional library in providing library services to blind and physically handicapped individuals during a calendar year. The selection was based on three criteria: mission support, creativity & innovation and patron satisfaction.
