Braille Institute is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate blindness and severe sight loss as a barrier to a fulfilling life.

Nearly 3,000 people were given access to classes in their own neighborhoods through our Community Outreach Program last year. More than 2,700 blind and visually impaired adults took classes at one of our five regional centers. We received more than 6,200 calls from across the country through our 1-800-BRAILLE line. Our Low Vision Rehabilitation specialists provided more than 5,400 consultations this year to visually impaired people across Southern California. Our Library Services brought talking books and braille materials to nearly 33,000 readers. Our Universal Media Services Department has more than 8,800 subscribers to braille and audio publications, including Expectations, The Braille Mirror Extra and Braille Special Collections. And, last year, our Child Development program served more than 200 families with children under age 6, more than 500 older kids up to age 18, and more than 200 young adults up to age 30.

About Us
Braille Institute provides an environment of hope and encouragement for people who are blind and visually impaired through integrated educational, social and recreational programs and services.

We provide assistance at our five regional centers in Southern California and through 200 Community Outreach programs.

In 2005-2006, the Institute provided these services to more than 55,000 people. The Institute is operated and funded almost entirely through private individual and foundation sources. Generous donors and dedicated efforts by more than 4,400 volunteers enable staff to provide training, programs and services without charge.
